Still, one of the things I like about the show is that in that particular setting, way out of their comfort zones, I think we get a more real peek at some of the personality behind the “celebs.” Now, normally, I wouldn’t care about that, but I find myself often pleasantly surprised that many of them can actually be kind of likable when they’re aren’t so busy putting on the celebrity image. I find myself liking and rooting for people who before I wouldn’t have given you a nickel for.

Case in point: Kelly Osbourne. I seriously about puked when I found out she was going to be on the show. I thought for sure she was going to be putting on the holy terror “I’m the outrageous daughter of a has-been rock star” routine and ruining the show. In fact, just the opposite is true. What you see is actually a nervous, vulnerable, kind of sweet girl who really wants to try to do well. You can almost see the emotional baggage that she surely carries melting off with each successful dance.

Aaron Carter for another. I probably would have wanted to kill that guy under normal circumstances, but you see underneath the image and he’s really just a hurt kid trying to be appreciated by someone. Or he’s an exceptional actor (not likely). He’s a really good dancer too, as it turns out.

Also, like with SYTYCD, I think it’s really cool to see how much the celebs root for each other, how much they really become close, even those you think would be polar opposites.

Anyway, I’m probably WAY over-analyzing it all. I just find it refreshing in today’s world of manufactured “reality” TV relationship drama (thanks a lot, “Real World!”)

The same does not go for DWTS. Lame. Why anyone would give a crap about has-been celebrities trying to re-ignite their careers is beyond me. I would have more respect for it if they always tried to cast “stars” that have at least some expectation of ability. It just feel like watching Entertainment Tonight. Much ado about nothing.

Oh yeah, and your new name is MrsHattyHat.

My concern now is that,after all that, there isn’t really anything left in the story well. Maybe they’ll throw in a 3rd race of creatures, just to mix it up.

1. No manufactured “reality” show drama. I really like that the dance community is just generally very supportive; all the dancers sincerely appreciate the others and want them to do well.

2. No (or minimal) Cowell-ish judge drama. They tell it like it is, respectfully but honestly, and they don’t try to force the results to go their way.

3. I love a good story, well told. I have come to appreciate how a great dancer (or dancers) can really tell stories. I thought Kapono from last season’s SYTYCD was fantastic at that, even if he wasn’t the best dancer.

(Am I still a guy?)

Finally, I like the difference between the two dance shows. In the one case, you have real dancers of all styles trying to cross boundaries and expand horizons. In the other case you have non-dancers who are really trying to dance well in very specific ballroom styles (we won’t see Cloris Leachman trying any contemporary dance, thankfully).

Anyway, I’m probably making way too much of it all, but I’m an unabashed fan, so I’m going to promote the principles as much as I can.

(And sashay all over the house while doing it!! Ok, maybe not that.)

Also not sure about V yet. I can’t stand that new shows are so afraid of early cancellation that they give themselves no time for exposition anymore. V gave away pretty much all the potential plot twists in the opening hour. Doesn’t bode well. There were enough cliches in characters and their dialog to choke a mule too.
